Camp Heebie Jeebies is proud to have some of today’s finest traditional jazz players as instructors.  In addition to the faculty members,  Camp HJ is fortunate to have a wonderful staff, several of whom are music teachers and who assist in teaching theory to the students. Other instructional resources include student assistants - students who have attended Camp Heebie Jeebies for several years and have reached a level of expertise on their instrument that enables them to help the beginner-level campers.  The faculty members are (click on picture for a larger view then click on the Back button to return to this page):


Howard Miyata - Trombone and tuba:    Howard is the biggest "kid" in camp and works with trombone and tuba players.  A retired music teacher, he is best known on the trad jazz circuit as the trombone player with the great High Sierra Jazz Band out of Three Rivers, CA.  Howard calls Gilroy, CA, home, but he travels all over the world with High Sierra playing at jazz festivals and on cruise ships all year long.
Craig Buhler - Sax and Improvisation: Craig Buhler, from Sequim, WA, is director & first tenor sax with Sequim’s “Stardust Big Band" and is the author of 2 books on music: “New Ears Resolution”, a revolutionary new ear training method and “Keys to Music” is a complete course in jazz woodwind technique. Craig is the Improvisation Coach for the NW Big Band Workshop, the Sequim High School Big Band, the Jazz in the Olympics Society (JITOS) Youth Band, and the North Winds Home School Big Band.
Jackson Stock -Trombone and Advanced Theory:  “The finest composer and arranger today” is how Jackson was described in a recent newspaper article when he conducted a big band made up of some of today’s giants of jazz such as Ernie Watts, Lew Soloff, and Abe Laboriel.  He attended  Berkelee School of Music and has played with  numerous big bands and Dixieland bands including the   Hot Frogs Jumping Jazz Band, the Henry Mancini Big Band, the Abalone Stompers, and many others.  Jackson teaches advanced theory and  arranging to students at camp.
John Goodrich - Reeds:  A consummate musician, John plays all the reeds from the bass sax to the clarinet and has been a member of the famous Uptown Lowdown Jazz Band of Seattle for 20 years.  Formerly a college music professor in Seattle, John is now solely a professional musician and plays with the ULJB at jazz festivals and other performances all over the world. He currently lives in Northwest Montana and is a guest artist with several jazz groups in the area.
   
Dan Comins - Cornet:  One of the hottest cornet players in traditional jazz, Dan holds a degree in music education (as well as being a CPA) and played for many years with the South Frisco Jazz Band, one of the finest   “Lu Watters-style”   trad bands in the world.   He is now leader of his own band, the Titanic Jazz Band, in the Los Angeles area which is fast becoming one of the most sought-after bands on the jazz festival circuit today.
  Marty Eggers - Piano:  Marty is from the Bay Area in northern California and plays piano and upright bass with numerous groups.  He is, or has recently been, a member of the Yerba Buena Stompers, Crown Syncopators, The Blue Five, the Sonny Leyland Trio, and many others.  He has a passion for ragtime and is an excellent trad piano player as well.
Karla West - Piano/Camp Director:  A classically trained pianist, Karla also plays Dixieland-style and ragtime piano.  She leads her own band in Kalispell, Montana,  and is the regular piano player with the  Hume  Street  Jazz Band of Aberdeen, Washington.  She also “subs” on occasion with other jazz bands such as  Last Chance Dixieland Jazz Band of Helena, MT, and the  Desert  City  Six  Jazz  Band  of Phoenix, AZ.    Karla has been involved with Camp Heebie Jeebies for 18 years and is the founder/director of the  Glacier Jazz Stampede, an annual traditional/ big band/swing festival held each October in Kalispell, Montana.  She holds a master's degree in business education and is on the faculty at Flathead Valley Community College in Kalispell.
Chuck Easton - Guitar Instructor:  Currently living in Chimacum, WA, Chuck Easton graduated from Boston’s Berklee College of Music and plays bass in the Pt. Townsend Orchestra and other groups.  Chuck also teaches lessons on flute, trombone, saxophone, guitar, bass, piano, and clarinet. For many years he has been on faculty for Centrum’s Jazz Pt. Townsend and the Elderhostel NW Big Band. He often joins local groups on guitar, bass, flute, alto saxophone and occasionally Eb tuba and trombone.
Sanford Feibus - Big Band Instructor: is a retired music teacher who taught in public schools of Pennsylvania and Arizona for 39 years. He currently lives in Sequim, WA, where he has been the director of the JITOS youth band for approximately five years, is the leader of the Stardust Big Band, and co-director of the Sequim City Band
Tom Jacobus - Tuba/Bass:Tom is a newcomer to the Camp Heebie Jeebies Faculty. He lives in the Tacoma area and is a public school teacher.  He is frequently seen at jazz festivals throughout the country as the regular trombone player with the Uptown Lowdown Jazz Band.  Tom also led his own band, the Evergreen Jazz Band, for many years, and he plays with the Evergreen Ragtime Trio.
John Hall - Drums:John is a long-time teacher in the San Diego area and has played with numerous jazz bands in southern California over the years.  He was the drummer with the well-known  Chicago Six Jazz Band  for many years.  He now subs with various groups in the area.
   
Marilyn Keller - Vocals: Marilyn's formative jazz training was as a member of the Mt. Hood Community College Vocal Jazz Ensemble and as the vocalist fronting the award-winning  MHCC  Jazz  Lab  Band.  Marilyn's versatility extends to the recording studio and she has contributed her talents to various original CD's, albums, demos and commercials.
